The Couple
Why Beka and Tyr? In a word: "chemistry." On the surface they seem very different. Beka, the
daughter of a drug-addicted smuggler and a woman whose history has remained unrevealed, is the
fiercely independent human captain of the cargo ship, Eureka Maru. She's tough, caring, and deeply in debt.
Despite (or perhaps because of) her own dysfunctinal family, she has
created her own family (Harper, Rev, Trance) out of a group of misfit space travelers. Tyr, the
son of Barbarossa and Victoria Anasazi, is a remnant of a Pride destroyed and forgotten. He's
used his genetically engineered intellect, weapons ability (and considerable brawn) to create a
life as a high-priced mercenary. His goal is to one day rebuild Kodiak Pride, with him as Alpha, and he has
forsaken any emotional entanglements along the way.
Despite their vastly different lifestyles, they have a great deal in common. Most importantly, they're
both survivors, and both admire something in each other. They're both cynical and self-interested,
though they've come to believe in the new Commonwealth and their mission to help the people of the galaxies
(Beka, more than Tyr, but "Belly of the Beast," showed how far he has come since the first episode.)
