We Came, We Saw, We Were Arrested by Klingons: The Report of the Lisa Ryder Fan Club at GenCon, 2002
by Deanie

Hi! Deanie here. If you don't know who I am (and you probably don't), I'm the webmistress of the unofficial Lisa Ryder site Lisacaps.com, as well as one of the staff members of the Official Lisa Ryder Fan Club. I was part of the LRFC contingent at GenCon, along with Fan Club President Evil Tiff Petherbridge and members Wolfy Knight and Sarah Johnson.

Tiff and I had flown into Milwaukee the night before, and had been up late the night before showing off all the tech equipment we had to record the entire Lisa Ryder Experience (including 2 digital cameras, one regular camera, a tape recorder, and a video camera). Therefore, we attended GenCon on 2 1/2 hours of sleep :)

We all met up at the main entrance at 8am on Saturday, the day of what was supposed to be Lisa's first day at GenCon. The only bad thing about the weekend was that GenCon changed her schedule, and she was there Friday and Saturday, so everyone but Wolfy missed all of her Friday appearances.

We first scoped out the room where Lisa was to have her Q&A, then looked around for a bit. We claimed the back row of the room, cameras (and other paraphernalia) in hand (we eventually ceded part of the back row as the room filled up). Lisa arrived, looking great in a black sleeveless turtleneck and jeans. She was asked many questions about acting, her auditions, Andromeda, Forever Knight and other topics. The entire transcript will be available at the Lisa Ryder Fan Club site as soon as Tiff transcribes it. The most memorable quote was Lisa's response when asked if she would be apart of any Forever Knight reunion (if it ever happened): "Give me fangs, and I'm there."

After the Q&A section, Lisa met with some of her fans (including us, the contingent from her official fan club). She is a very nice, friendly, incredibly cool person.

Then, Lisa had to go (she apparently had things to do before her autograph session that afternoon). We went to get lunch, and to get our gift to Lisa (a LRFC Gencon T-shirt).

We arrived back in time for the autograph session, and stood in line to get ourselves autographed pictures. We also presented Lisa with her T-shirt, and a CD including the music videos Tiff and I had made. After that, we wandered around the Exhibit Hall, just looking at all the gaming and sci-fi stuff available.

Then Wolfy disappeared for a little while, and when she returned, she was shortly followed by two Klingons. The "Klingon Jail 'n Bail" is an annual event for charity, where the Klingons take donations, and in return "arrest" the person of your choice and take them to Klingon jail, where they are tortured by being forced to sing and dance in their public cell. Wolfy had Tiff arrested, and she was forced to do the hokey pokey and sing "I'm a Little Teapot" until her time was up.

This gave Tiff an idea. A wonderfully, awful idea. Which begins to lead up to how we all ended up in the cell. Tiff thought it would be cool (and a wonderful way to raise money for charity) to have Lisa arrested. So we arranged for Lisa's arrest (on charges including "having cool hair.")

After her autograph session, Lisa went to the restroom. Upon her return, she found three Klingons sitting in her autograph area. They "arrested" her, and led her through the crowd, telling everyone about her arrest. We were following (cameras in hand), and the whole procession drew quite a crowd as we made our way through the main exhibit hall to the Klingon jail cell.

Shortly after Lisa was incarcerated, she began laughing. Then the Klingons got the four of us, and threw us in the cell with her! Then someone offered a "bribe" to the guards (ie, donated more money) to have Lisa sprung from the pokey. The Klingon guard announced this, then asked the crowd if anyone else wanted to donate money to either keep her in jail or get her out. Many people in the crowd gave money for both purposes. In the end, Lisa "bought" her way out of jail with the currency of the stars -- autographed pictures.

The rest of us? We were still stuck in Klingon jail, and were forced to sing the theme from "Scooby Doo" during our time of incarceration. After we were finished, Lisa offered to pay to get us out of jail if it meant we would stop singing.

Then, Lisa had to go (she was flying back Saturday night). And the rest of us hung out for a little while, before retreating to Sarah's house for dinner, and to introduce Wolfy to the joys of Andromeda.

Pictures, video files, and wavs will be available both at my site (http://www.lisacaps.com) and at the Official Lisa Ryder Fan Club web site (http://www.lrfcfonline.com).
